Timeouts, it can go by any other name

We mommies all know that the toddler years, specially what we call the "terrible twos" is the phase when we find disciplining our kids so exhausting. This is the stage when the little ones are just trying to understand the context of our words and the varying tones we use can sometimes be confusing for them.

As a three-time mom, I realize that there's no one size fits all when it comes to discipline. Each child has his or her own personality which they exhibit even at an early age. In my case, having my girls 3 years apart from each other had really gave me a chance to observe their personalities, which I could not write about here in deference to our Big Ate (Big Sister) who does not want to be talked about.
In our case, hubby and I both agree that whatever happens there will be no hurting the girls, not even a slap at the back of their palms. Just like most other parents agree, there are creative ways of disciplining our kids. What best works for us though is a 2-minute timeout. And with each of them, it goes by a different name "Parusa" (punishment) to our Big Ate, "Face the Wall" for our Small Ate, and "Discipline" for our Baby Oyen which she calls "dis-pins".
One way or the other works in different levels. Our eldest took it so seriously that there had only been one time she got to stand by the wall. Our middle child learned how to work around it, as early as 2 she learned that if you can't break the rule, then go around it! lol! One time to bring it to a new level I asked her to stand by the wall inside their room, when I checked on her after a minute, I saw her slowly crawling to her bed to get her doll then slowly crawling back again to the wall with her doll. Smart move! So now she won't get bored while standing by the wall!
With the little one, this "dis-pins" is a bit tricky. It doesn't seem to scare her one bit. One time while walking to the mall from the parking lot, I was trying to hold her tightly to stop her from running across the road. She suddenly faced me and asked me and asked my why she is being "dis-pins"-ed in the middle of the road! Guess she couldn't comprehend how "dis-pins" would work without a wall!
